Internet Control Message Protocol
The TCP/IP protocol used to send control and error information regarding IP datagram transmissions. When an IP datagram cannot be delivered to its destination, perhaps because the machine at the destination is temporarily out of service or message traffic is too heavy, a router may use ICMP to notify the sender of the failure.
