Label Sizes | Gap
and Edge Trim | Size Requirements
Label Sizes
Labels may be various sizes. The label's size will be determined by the intended
use of the label, the label printer's capabilities, the applicator's requirements
and the manufacturer's capabilities.
Labels, whether sheets, rolls or fanfolded, are converted from
a master roll of material. This material, as it unwinds through the press is
called the web. The finished label dimensions are defined as width across
the web and length along the web. Repeat length is the measurement
from one label to the next.
Width - Refers to the dimension across a
roll of labels or across a fanfolded label or across a sheet of labels.
Length - Refers to the dimension along the
length of the roll, along the length of the fanfolded label or down
the sheet of labels.
Repeat Length - Refers to the dimension from
the top edge of one label to the top edge of the next label.
Gap and Edge Trim
The gap and edge trim are measurements that the manufacturer
is going to need to know for die cut and butt-cut labels.
Gap - The gap between labels is the distance
from the bottom edge of one label to the top edge of the next label.
The dimension runs along the web.
Edge Trim - The edge trim is the distance
from the edge of the label to the edge of the liner. This dimension
runs across the web.
Butt-Cut - Butt-cutt labels have no gap between
them. Generally the facestock of the butt-cut labels run to the edge
of the liner, eliminating the edge trim also.

Size Requirements for Different Types of Labels
Labels in Roll Form
Size information needed when ordering roll labels:
- Label size and repeat length
- Label type: die cut, butt-cut, or sleeve
- Dimension of gap, edge trim, or sleeve circumference
- Size and location of perforations
- Inside core diameter of roll
Inside Core Diameter - Must meet the label printer & applicator
requirements.
Roll Diameter - Will vary according to the quantity of labels
but will be limited in size according to maximum roll diameter that
the label printer or applicator will accept.
Fanfolded Labels
Size information needed when ordering fanfolded labels:
- Label size and repeat length
- Carrier size (Liner
of label)
- Number of labels wide
- Gap dimension between labels
- Edge trim dimension
- Maximum stack size if printer has stack size limitations
Note: Label and carrier
size will be restricted according to continuous forms manufacturing
specifications for fanfolded forms and printer capabilities.
Laser Sheet Labels
Size information needed when ordering laser sheet
labels:
- Sheet size and repeat length
- Label size
- Number of labels wide and down
- Gap size between labels
Standard
Laser Sheet Sizes:
8 1/2" x 11"
8 1/2" x 14"
Individual Labels
Size information needed when ordering loose individual
lablels:
Pressure Sensitive Labels
- Label size
- Carrier size if larger than the label
- Gap and edge trim if required
- Placement of the slit and whether it is on the face of the label
or on the liner
Container Labels
- Flat label size or circumference of sleeve
- Die cut shape if required

Note: Before ordering a custom label
on a roll, a custom fanfolded label or a custom sheet label,
check with the manufacturer for the standard sizes they have
