Promotional Mailers

Perforation are generally added to promotional mailers so that a section of the mailer, such as a business reply card, can be detached from the rest. They are also sometimes used on a fold of the mailer to help the mailer fold properly.

When selecting the TPI for the perforations, you will need to consider the location of the perf, how easily it needs to detach, the type of paper stock being used and how strong will it need to be to hold up through processing and mail delivery. Your manufacturer will be able to help you make the proper choose for your needs.

Self Mailers

Self mailers can have perforations added to them for several purposes. Stub perfs are added to allow the mailer to be opened when received by the recipient. Perforations are sometimes added in the fold location to assist in folding. They are also used to allow a section of the mailer to be detached from the rest of the mailer. All perforations should be clean cut so they are easy for the recipient to remove but strong enough so that they will not fall apart when handling.  Most self mailers are manufactured with a tighter perf to provide stability for the mailer during processing and mail delivery.

Most manufacturers will have standard TPI that they use for the different perforations according to what type of self mailer it is and what type of processing equipment it will be running through. If you want a perf that is looser or tighter than the standard, you should first discuss your options with your manufacturer to be sure that changing the size of the perf will not cause a problem when processing.

Continuous Multiple Part Mailers

Continuous multiple part mailers have perforations added for detaching the left and right linehole stubs before mailing and to create stubs that can be detached by the recipient in order to open the mailer and reveal its content. Perforations can also be added to the inserts within the mailer to allow parts of it to be detached. The continuous mailers must follow the same perforation guidelines as a standard continuous form.

Perforations should be clean so they are easy for the recipient to remove but strong enough to hold together through processing and mailing. Most manufacturers will have standard TPI that they use on the different perforations according to what type of mailer it is and on how it will be handled and processed. If you want a perf that is looser or tighter than the standard, you should first discuss your options with your manufacturer to be sure that changing the size of the perf will not cause a problem when processing.
