Promotional Mailers
If the mailer is being prepared so that automated
mailing rates can be used, the size of the mailer must fit the Letter
and Card size specifications, and the open edge of the mailer must be
sealed by some method. The type of closures available are tabs, wafer seals,
tape, line glue and spot glue. Staples should not be used because they can cause
damage to the automated mail processing equipment. Shown below are some of the
closure types and the specifications that need to be followed to qualify for
automated mailing rates. The specifications need to be followed to allow the
mailer to run properly through the automated mail processing equipment.

|
Note: When placing tabs/wafer
seal on the mailer, be sure they do not interfere with the facing
identification mark, rate marking, return address, delivery address
and bar code. If they are placed in the bar
code clear zone they must meet the paper standards an ink
acceptance standards set up by the USPS, unless the bar code is in
the address block.

for complete details.

Gluing
When using glue to seal the mailer,
it should be glued at the top and the fold should be at the bottom
when viewed from delivery address side. Paper stock should be a minimum
weight of 20 lb. Note: If the mailer has a business reply card,
the paper weight will have to meet the postal requirements for business
reply mail.
There are several different glue types
available that can be used to seal the mailer. The type you use will
depend on how strong the seal must be and how easily you want the
mailer to open. It will also depend on your manufacturer's capabilities.
|
|
Standard continuous line gluing would be a permanent
type glue that is going to provide a strong hold. When it is pulled
apart it may cause damage to the paper. A fugitive type glue can also
be used that will do a good job of sealing the mailer and pulls apart
more easily, causing less damage to the paper.
|
|
Spot gluing can also be accomplished using permanent or fugitive glue.
Both types will open easier than the continuous line glue because of
less glue coverage. Another type of spot glue that is used is a tacky
glue dot that pulls apart easily and has some resealing properties.
Cellophane Tape
Tape can be used to seal the open edge
of your mailer but it may not be used in the bar code clear zone.
Note: If the mailer
fits the size
specifications for Flats, you are not required to use
any type of closure. The mailers can be sealed with closure
types shown above as long as they do not interfere with the
facing identification mark, rate marking, return address, delivery
address and bar code.
