Press Punching | Bindery Punching | Punching Specifications

Unit sets can be file hole punched by two different procedures. They can be punched on the press as the forms are being printed or they can be punched in bindery after the forms have been printed and collated together.

Press Punching

File holes are punched on a web press as the forms are being printed.

  • File punching can be added on any number of parts. If you have press punching on a  carbon interleaved form, the punching will not go through the carbon.
  • The punching can change locations from part to part.
  • Standard configurations are:
         - two holes, 2 3/4" center to center, top or bottom of the form.
         - three holes, 4 1/4" center to center on the left side of the form
  • Configurations other than standard may have restrictions so consult your supplier.
  • Press punching is less expensive on larger runs due to the efficiency of punching on the press as the form is being printed.

Bindery Punching

File holes are punched as a secondary operation in the bindery department.

  • File punching must go through all of the parts. If the form is carbon interleaved, the punching will go through the carbon.
  • The punching cannot change locations from part to part.
  • The standard configurations are the same as for the press punching.
  • There are no restrictions on non-standard punching configurations.
  • Bindery punching is more expensive on longer runs due to the labor involved in being an offline operation.

Punching Specifications

Specifications needed by your supplier:

Number of holes - Diameter size of hole - Center to center measurement from hole to hole - Position of punch - Parts to be punched

Example: 3 holes - 1/4" Dia. - 4 1/4" center to center - at left - on parts 2 & 3 only.

Also indicate if the holes are parallel or perpendicular to the stub width.

Note: If file punching is needed only on specific parts and cannot be punched through all parts in that same location, then the form must be press punched.

Unit Sets can contain a combination of press punching and bindery punching.
